Mulch is a go-to for landscapers, gardeners, and those passionate about sustainability—and it’s easy to understand why!
Mulch is a protective layer of wood material that is spread over the surface of the soil to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and erosion, and provide nutrients for plants. It can also raise soil temperatures in colder climates, enabling earlier planting and longer growing seasons as well as insulating plants from freezes and heavy rains.
Beyond its practical benefits, mulch adds a clean, finished look to gardens and landscaped areas.
We’re fans of mulch because of its incredible sustainability factor: Mulch production provides an environmentally friendly solution for recycling organic waste materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or incinerators.
So how do we make our mulch?

1. Collect
We take any and all kinds of wood for our mulch: lumber, pallets, crating, brush, stumps, land-clearing debris, you name it. The wood we receive can generally be sorted into two categories—dried kiln wood and green wood. We utilize both types in our mulch to create a combination that lasts and retains its color. We then work with our partner Benchmark Companies to start converting those unwanted materials into mulch!

2. Shred
The wood goes into a powerful horizontal grinder where it is shredded into small chips. The grinders can handle anything from twigs to tree trunks, pulverizing everything into fragments.

3. Screen
The wood chips then go through a trommel screen that sorts them by size and removes unwanted materials (like dirt, sand, ash, etc.). The mulch is then sent through multiple screens to achieve a perfect, consistent size for gardening and landscaping.
The screening process yields “fines”, wood pieces that are 1” or less in size, which advance to the next stage; and “mids”, wood pieces that are 1”–3”, which are sent off to be used for clean energy and fuel. Any pieces bigger than 3” are sent back to the grinder to go again.

4. Color
Coloring the mulch is the final stage, as the approved “fines” are loaded into the colorizer machine. We have three mulch color options: black, mission brown, and uncolored.

5. Ship
Together with Benchmark, we can bulk deliver mulch, or customers can pick it up directly.
Our passion is finding creative, effective methods to reuse and recycle everything around us, and making mulch is one way we can practice being good stewards of our planet’s resources.
